Distracting cheese photo, I understand. Before anything else, before drooling over that melted raclette, I’d like to share with you the reason behind that oozing raclette cheese served to us at Edsa Shangri-la Hotel.
The Embassy of Switzerland in Manila and Edsa Shangri-la Hotel partnered to celebrate Swiss Week in the Philippines. A week of showcasing the uniqueness and diversity of Swiss culture.

Swiss Week Activities

On November 19, premium wines from Switzerland courtesy of Werdenberg, Inc. will be featured alongside masterpieces by national artist, Arturo Luz, during the hotel’s monthly Art of Wine event. A live yodeling performance is in the offing on this special evening. A four-course meal by Chef Robert Cauchi at Paparazzi is available at Php1,500 net, inclusive of Swiss wines for the tasting and hearty canapés that will be served at The Gallery during the Art of Wine cocktail.

Other Swiss Week activities include performances by Swiss-born jazz artist Eliane Amherd in various jazz clubs and venues in Manila. There will also be a Swiss Week Musical Experience to be held at Rizal Park on November 22, featuring three musical acts fronted by Swiss groups: Eliane Amherd, the Swiss Yodel Ladies and Raoul and the Wild Tortillas.

In order to experience a portion of the Swiss celebration here in Manila, I attended the luncheon organized by Edsa Shangri-la Hotel at my all-time favorite Shang restaurant, Heat.
Two of Manila’s esteemed Swiss chefs – Thomas Wenger, former executive chef of Mandarin Oriental Manila and Makati Shangri-La, and Martin Kaspar, chef and owner of L’Entrecôte restaurant – prepared a smorgasbord of Swiss indulgences. Other than Swiss dishes, the highlights were on premium wines by Werdenberg, Inc.
On November 13-23, it’s your turn to experience a Swiss gastronomic affair.

The Food:

Swiss Cold Cuts & Cheeses
Air Dried Beef, Speck, Landjaeger, Cured Ham and Buure Schublig, Appenzeller, Tilsit & Tete De Moine Cheeses on a thick wooden board. Premium cuts to start off our Swiss luncheon.
Swiss Soup Sampler
Basler Mehlsuppe, Bundner Gerstensuppe and Berner Erbensuppe Mit Gnagi
Berner Erbensuppe Mit Gnagi, also called as the Green Pea soup, stood out among the 3 types of soup.
The rest still had its own distinction, simple and reflects how Swiss enjoy their typical hot soup.
Venison Stew
The Swiss call Venison Stew their “Hunter style” dish. Literally speaking, this meat made of deer, came from the process of hunting. Having the normal palate for chicken, pork or beef meat, it may take time to have the appreciation for Venison Stew instantly. Its texture may add to the factor, a little mashed inside with a gamey taste.
Raclette Cheese
The highlight of our luncheon, which until now, I’d say I still have a hangover. A big slab of Raclette Cheese lying face to face under a heating lamp. Once the edge softened, that means the cheese is ready to be scraped off.
If only I could take this Racelette Cheese home with me! Including the heating lamp too! :p
Served with baby potatoes, my plate of raclette cheese was gone in just a few seconds.
Vacherin Vermecille
Early Christmas with chestnuts roasting on my dessert plate. Vacherin Vermecille is a chocolate dessert cake with chestnuts puree layered inside.
After dessert, what’s running in my mind is just one Swiss cheese. I wanted to take one more plate of Raclette Cheese and baby potatoes. Obsessed over raclette!!!
