At a Juice Party I attended last month, a recurring issue on drinking sodas was lifted up again. But this time, the issue is taken seriously.
In support of the Healthy Beverages Options Act 4021 of the Philippines, Fly Ace Corporation launched their first healthy beverage fete called “Juice Party.” How wholesome, clean and healthy does that party sound to you? As a juice freak, I wasn’t bothered not drinking sodas at the party at all. An emotion of excitement covered me that day.
According to Fly Ace Corporation, one of the leading food and beverage consumer goods companies in the Philippines, Juice Party advocates for the consumption of 100% fruit juice. Health matters the most. Research proves in many ways that drinking moderate amounts of 100% fruit juice among kids can ensure an overall well-balanced diet while drinking about 8 glasses of water a day is still best for kids and adults.
Prof. L Callanta
Professor Luchie Callanta, a Nutrition expert, shared to us the Drink Pyramid, which illustrates the types and ideal consumption amount of beverages. I felt like I was back in school as she talked about various fruits and their health benefits. It’s an A-Z of knowing our fruits.
My take on that? An apple a day keeps my doctor away. Haha! I just love how she emphasized on certain fruits like apple, grapes, cranberries and plums. Most of them are rich in fiber, which I need, and benefits in fighting off cancer and asthma.
Guest Speaker – Congresswoman Leni Robredo
Now the hottest topic of the day was brought by the event’s Guest Speaker, Congresswoman Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo of Camarines Sur, widow of Jesse Robredo.
Should sodas be banned in schools or not? As I chitchatted with one of my seatmates Rowena of Animetric, she mentioned that this issue isn’t new to her anymore based on her experience. Xavier Schol and ICA, where her kids study, already banned sodas long long ago.
Healthy Beverages Options Act 4021 of the Philippines talks about banning of prohibited drinks in all schools, from pre-school to high school. It insists on the need for the regulation of the availability of beverage to children in schools. This means, all schools shall educate the students in the effects of the consumption of unhealthy food and drinks, including too much sugar intake effects to our bodies.
What are the prohibited drinks? Stating the obvious, these are softdrinks, sport drinks, punches, any drink containing caffeine and additional sweeteners, fruit-based beverages with less than 50% real juice, etc. Name the monster drinks, Healthy Beverages Act trying to push them away.
What should be sold in schools? Only fruit based drinks greater than 50% real fruit juice and water of course. Part of the house bill is to set a budget for free potable water in all schools, most especially public schools. Potable readily available for every student sounds convincing to me!
Any violent reactions soda lovers?
You may ask, “Who brought this issue to court?”
Well, here’s the little man behind this act. Let me introduce you to Daniel “Chip” Gatmaytan also known as “Soda Slayer,” a ten-year old student at Multiple Intelligence School who campaigned for the regulation of beverages offered in schools since 2011.
The brave young boy a.k.a. Soda Slayer asked the help of his parents to take his campaign seriously and pass this bill with the help of our government leaders. His commitment to banning sodas in schools is incredible! I’m more than impressed!
Currently, Chip is part of every movement in order to pass this bill, Healthy Beverages Options Act 4021.
Mr. Mad Scientist came in with a magician’s energy as he entertained the guests with his scientific experiments.
Even though I’m far from being a parent yet, I think my future children will benefit from this bill once this is passed and approved. The formative years of my child is going to critical. Exposing him/her to sodas could cause more trouble to his/her health than good benefits.
